Mandatory data retention regime will create surveillance tax

This morning on Melbourne’s 3AW Mornings program with Neil Mitchell I explained why a “surveillance tax” is set to be imposed on every Australian internet user:

…if this scheme does come about, there will be added costs and the reason for that is that what will be required under the regime is for internet service providers to retain and store more data than they currently do for billing purposes. So because they need ways – you know, they need to be able to store this information that the Government’s forcing them to keep, that means that there’s added costs on the internet service providers and those, invariably, will be passed through to the consumer.
