Celebrity of the week: Phil Lord and Christopher Miller

The_Lego_Movie_posterThe Lego Movie¬†is out on DVD. If you have small children, you’ve probably already seen it forty times and can recite the film backwards. You’ll also know the film’s hidden secret: it’s the most libertarian film out there. It praises ingenuity and entrepreneurship, and rallies against cronyism.

Don’t get distracted by the bad guy being named President Business, it’s our kind of film. The basic plot is laid out in this piece titled ¬†‘The Libertarian Populism of The Lego Movie:’

As the movie progresses, we see that Lord/President Business has used nearly every facet of popular culture to subdue the masses and stifle their creativity. Everything must conform to specific instructions. These instructions are Bricksburg’s regulations and are strictly enforced by government in the form of Scribble-Face Bad Cop … Creating outside those regulations is not allowed.

That sounds pretty much like 1984, but with double decker couches!

The Adam Smith Institute also has a piece on its awesomeness, and aside from politics, it’s actually a really good film.
