Freedom of speech defined by the football club you support

If anyone ever needed proof of the farcical nature of ‘hate speech’ laws they now have it – the British Prime Minister assigning freedom of speech based on…what football team you support.

On Monday I wrote about the debate currently raging in Britain on whether supporters of English football team Tottenham Hotspur (of which a large number are Jewish) should be allowed to describe themselves as the ‘Yid Army’. David Cameron has waded in saying:

There’s a difference between Spurs fans self-describing themselves as Yids and someone calling someone a Yid as an insult. You have to be motivated by hate. Hate speech should be prosecuted – but only when it’s motivated by hate.

The freedom of speech of individuals has long been compromised based on their race, gender, religion and sexuality. The fact that supporters of one football club are allowed to use words that supporters of another club are not, certainly takes it to a new level!
